akujin yes Mad! did use Gara as inspiration for Garrison..he even said once that his name is Gara's son..get it. Some others that he said are..
Bretto= is from Giant Robo and Neon Genesis Evanglion Monika= Inspiration from Mai from Fatal Fury knolan= The old guy from Ninja Scroll and others say Master Roshi from DBZ
I also didn't say Cruz actually used tracing paper.."What Roger Cruz did is basicly took tracing paper over Mad's drawing and used them in X-men books." I meant the drawings are so close it's hard to tell. I really wish Swipe of the Week was still around it would end this argument once and for all.

what if roger cruz was an animator, and MAD! was the storyboard artist? different medium, i know, but imitation is essential for animation production. doesnt it look like jeff matsuda does the batman cartoon all by himself? its all just a part of art. MAD!s stuff wouldnt look as memerizing if he didnt have competition or imitators. thx for your time, the invisible poster

Again we're not talking about someone copying someone elses style. Even in animation it isn't the same as what Roger Cruz is doing.
Lets say you're in an animation studio and the character designer..let's say Glen Keane on Tarzan, he did the designs and all the animators have to draw the same design in different ways..moving around, jumping, etc. They don't copy the same picture over and over or it would never move. Sure it's the same style and if that's all Roger Cruz was doing was copying the style again it wouldn't be a problem..his problem is he draws the same picture.

You should put that info on Mad's Wiki, and cite your source. I've read some speculation on it, but nothing official.Gara's Son... lol... Although Swipe of the Week had some interesting swipes, i've never seen anything blatantly obvious about Mad/Cruz. Do you remember the pages of the comic in question? Kinda curious.

For Monika I thought she was inspired by Jessica Rabbit Quote=Mad! (I think ): The baddest of comic bad girls. That's what I wanted Monika to be. Obviously, her proportions were...shall we say extragerrated, to sort of a poke a little fun at how women are portrayed in comics today. Sort of the "Jessica Rabbit" of the BC world.

Hate to dig up an old topic, but hey why not, have to chime in... I am totally with Madman here, being influenced by another artist is fine, hopefully you will grow and learn from the master you look up to and you will become your own strong indiviudal artist. Copying someone's drawings nearly exactly and passing it off as your own work is totally unprofessional and un-artistic, it's really lame. Cruz's work is forever tainted in my eyes for the swipes he did. I can never look at his work and not wonder where he might have stolen a pose from or facial expression. Check this guy out, I mentioned him in another post, good example of someone influenced by joe but does his own thing... david-grier.deviantart.com/

Looks a LOT like Mads work to me.....I dont know. I'm not saying hes swiping anything, but there can only be one Joe Mad.....as long as you are comfortable being a wannabe MAD, thats fine......Hes got skills, its a shame he isn't forging out a new direction.....but these things happen with time. He will most likely outgrow that, and put more of his individual style in his art. But I just have to laugh whenever I open a book and see 'poor man's' MAD art.
