First let me say I agree w/ everyone about the colors being to dark.
The story...was there a story? The writing was very weak for this. We get Mad! back after years and years, and Loeb puts out a story without one iota of info of what has happened between the end of series 2 and now. I really, really disliked the story with the exception of Hawkeye.
To be honest, it just doesn't feel like The Ultimates to me. Joe's artwork is as great as ever, but it is quite a contrast (as I knew it would be) from Hitch's work. Add in Loebs complete change in writing style, and it just doesn't feel right. Heck, Cap seemed like an afterthought. "Oh, I should shove him in for a couple panels."
I would've preferred to have Mad! on a different title with a different writer. His artwork is among the elite, and unfortunately, it was the only good thing about Ultimates 3.

tfitz- Well just give it a chance maybe things will pickup on the next issue. I've read a bunch of bad reviews on other sites but I'm sure this book is gonna rock! One of the persons who gave it a bad review said he'll still pick up the next issue. All I really care about is Joe's artwork and I'm glad he's back. It be cool if they release and issue with just pencils.

I really enjoyed the first issue. Joe's art is the major draw for me, duh, and it did not disappoint. The writing seems just OK, fun but nothing earthshattering.
My one issue is how the colors printed. As many others have said the colors printed too dark and I found myself straining at times to see Joe's work through the murk. Some people don't seem to care but I sure do after waiting so long for this work to see print. This did disappoint me to an extent and I hope it is corrected on the coming issues, reprints, and eventual hardcover/tpb.

Hey Nathen, is there any way to see if you can get permission to send the rest of the Ultimates 3 pencils? I remember you saying you had about 4-6 pages of pencils (or am i mistaken?) and i was just wondering if its ok for you to show us? Thanks bud.

I'm sorry if this was covered before or not, but I did a search and couldn't find anything. I also thought it best not to start a new thread.
So this book is my first actual comic subscription directly through the publisher (I've always gone through my comic shop before). I subscribed through Marvel.com. I paid, like, $24 for 12 issues, or whatever. So my question is, since Ultimates 3 is only 5 issues, will I be sent 7 issues of Ultimates 4 when it comes out? Or what? Does anybody know?
Thank you.

Perhaps marvel should clear this one using there internet resourses, have they already?? However I would think you get 12 issues of THE ULTIMATES regardless of what volume and issue your 12th and final comic lands on.

This is my first post on the forums even though I've been checking out the art on here for years, so Hi everybody. I've been an Ultimates fan for years but, like everyone else here, an even bigger Joe Mad fan for longer (Hell, Mad's work got me into drawing!), so I was excited to see Joe step back into his comic shoes, but found it odd that his first book would be Ultimates. Ultimates, to me, is like the older brother of the Ultimate Universe, political intrigue, mature dialogue and socially conscious issues. Joe Mad's work always struck me more because of its kinetic energy, better suited for an action book than pages of people sitting around in a room discussing global issues. It's kinda like seeing Jackie Chan star in a serious courtroom drama, so far from the status quo. Nevertheless, Mad's art didn't disappoint at all, his designs, his interior detail, and his fast-paced action sequences were top-notch, I was a giddy little fanboy all over again. Only disappointment was Loeb's handling of issue 1, he's a skilled writer who can put together complex themes, but it felt more like he was writing the Ultimates for a 5 year old. I'm hoping the story begins fleshing out more from issue 2 onwards, would hate to think the quality of Ultimates' writing is being dumbed-down. No doubt Joe Mad's pencils will be kick azz

Art > hands down the best so far! Colors > awesome! needs a little tweaking though, too dark. Story > a little disappointed on the story, too many things happening at once without letting us know why. lets just see how issue 2 pans out...
