I know, I know. The infamous Roger Cruz is not much liked here among the Joe Mad fans. I, too dislike the dude, but being an artist and liking many artist who resemble or mimic Joe Mad's style, I cannot help but wonder what this guy is doing now. The last time I saw his work(if you want to call it his) is a book called 'Victory'. I think he did a cover and that said cover there was a character who very much looked like Red Monika. Same hair color, same type of pose if not mistaken, same boobs. All in all, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any new work besides the 'Victory' stuff?

He has talent but once you swipe in my book and it gets printed(if you learning that's fine) you should be like kicked out of art. I'm not saying that cause he swiped Mad!..can you imagine if it's your(like mine) dream to draw professionally and the first piece you get published and this jackass copies it...man I would be so hella pissed.

I don't like him because he was a notorious swiper. The same reason why I can't stand Ed Benes.

When he's not swiping, he's an okay artist. Especially if Joe Mad! is not around and you need a Joe Mad! fix. Talent Caldwell is starting to draw a lot like Mad! I've noticed. Check out his Wildcats gig. You can definetly see some Mad! mixed with some Turner.

There is a point where you go to far, and you aren't "influenced", you are "ripping off"....Cruz makes money, he draws and gets paid....but Its the same as me hating Ja Rule cuz he sucks.....even though he makes money doing what he wants, ya know? Besides, this is MAD's forum, so we gotta rep our champ!

Ok Ok, Now I heard a couple times people here didnt like Roger Cruz. Now Im not the biggest fan of the guy, But I do have his site in my bookmarks and did admire him until this came up.

But I'm kinda at a stalemate here. When I see Mad's work I can tell its his. And it took till readin in the forums for me to see the resemblances Roger's work and Joe Mads. and granted I can see some resemblances, but for the most part I can easily tell them apart. Now if there are specific pieces that I havent seen that can leave me without A Doubt I would like to see them if you have them. Cause Im curious. this guy seems like a good artist. and as I stated in a previous Post. I believe its almost impossible to mimic another persons style without haveing your own influences and habbits in it. Also Im curious as to if Mad himself ever had anything to say about this??

On a side note, if he really is a copy I still kinda have to sympathize with the guy. I'm not tring to justify his actions but there are a handful artist who can actualy say they are truly orignal and Joe Mad is one of the lucky few. Some people are born with talent and some Have to work all there lives to achieve greatness only for it to turn out to be mediocre. Not saying joe hasnt work hard, But I feel he has alot of natural talent which some people dont have and have to work under others and aspiring after others only to dish out something slightly oringinal but obviously influenced. And the same goes for any art like music. How many bands do you hear that sound exactly the same.

Go to your Comicbook store and look at all the different comics. Im pretty sure youll notice that alot of them do have similarities. Even on Deviant art I see so many comic book styles from different artist that look so much alike. And Alot fo them even tend to look like they were influenced by Mad as well. Also if you look you'll notice that between generations theres seems to be alot of similarities. Older comics all tend to have there similarities in styles, Where as todays comics tend to look alot different form the older ones, but still have similarities through out the Generation. And In my Opinion Joe Mad has set the bar for this generation. So natrualy alot of people will aspire after him and try to achive the greatness he has.

This is a tough Bussiness, There are alot of artist in the world, and its impossible for them all to be original. Otherwise that defeats the meaning of the word.

thats why im glad im going to be an animator. Cause they all have to learn to draw under ONE style. Although I'm Told I have a bit of a unique style among friends and other artist. I know that my style is merely a mixture of things I liked from other artists. Mixed in with my own.

Well there are my 2 cents. ( and a quarter)
But I am curiouos as to if any one has any REALY GOOD examples of Roger copying Mad. Maybe theres something I'm Missing.

I love joe's style and im trying to incorporate it into my style. So if i were to publish the comic i'm busy drawing with a likeness to joes art, does that mean i'll get booed off the sight just for being inspired??
I think its unfair. Rog may be influenced thats all i mean who wouldnt be?

theres a differance between influenced and rip off. Some one mentioned Earlier A Ed Benes who I gave a look into only to discover that his style looks ALOT like joe mads. Now im not gonna mock his skills as an artist. I just wish he could have came up with a style a Little less resembling Joes. but usualy once your at pro level you have the skills to draw in any style you want. But its nice to develope one of your own that YOUR happy with.

Seriously drawing in Mad's style is fine. What Roger Cruz did is basicly took tracing paper over Mad's drawing and used them in X-men books. If all he did was drew in the style I wouldn't have a problem with him at all. There was a site that was dedicated to swipers (people that copied other artists art and claimed it as their own)..roger cruz was like on their over hundreds of times mostly copying Mad's stuff, he copied others drawings too Jim Lee, etc. Again we are talking about copying a picture not the style. Too bad the site is gone cause it would close this discussion once and for all....roger cruz sucks hard and I say that as artist not just a Mad! fan.

As far as Ed Benes I have no idea.

Also Mad! did say something about it. In the background in a panel of Uncanny Xmen book he wrote Cruz Swipes again on the newspaper one of the characters is holding..can't remember the issue off the top of my head I'll find it tonight maybe.
