Lately I have been jonesing for a good batman series to pickup preferably in a trade paperback because i have no comic shops near by. I have been hearing good things about dark knights I think, I don't really remember the name and I haven't read a DC book in a long time. So anyone out there know a great batman story they could recommend?

The killing Joke is supposedly a good one. Definitely a great Joker tale and is somewhat the basis of what the next Batman film will be about. I usually go for art and I liked Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee's Hush story arc. Good story and great artwork. Um...what else? Andy Kubert is finishing up on a story arc with Grant Morrison. I think its called Son of the Bat. I can't think of much else on the top of my head. I'll have to get back with you on this one...

AVOID Batman Confidential AT ALL COSTS! Someone has to tell Portacio that his art sucks. On topic: Batman and Son (kubert's run on monthly Batman) Arkham Asylum Living Hell Anything from Loeb+Tim Sale (Dark victory-Long halloween-etc etc) Batman The Killing Joke (great one-issue story) Dark Detective EDITOFC Loeb+Lee's run on Batman. AKA: HUSHd**n. That portacio guy made me forget about Hush... Blame Portacio for that edit EDITTry'em out. (Esp the loeb+sale) My 2c -Hephasto.

That's quite true Ups. And i do know that Portacio had to overcome some major life-changing things but hey.
i think i do have the right to type my opinion. And my thoughts are simple. He WAS a great artist. With great renderings and everything, but now i think he lost it.
And mind you. The frist thing i did, when i heard about Wetworks revamp and the Batman Confidential gig, was to put'em instantly in my pull list.
Now, sadly i had to take'em out just because the pencils (and the story in Batman) didn't work for me.
Again... he WAS a great artist...

I agree that Portacio's art just doesn't fit the Batman Confidential book. The Batman stories I like (which have been mentioned for the most part) are:
Killing Joke Batman: Year One Dark Knight Returns The Long Halloween and Dark Victory and a more recent one was the TPB of Detective Comics (821-826?) with Paul Dini writing which was pretty good too
Its true, I think most work done by Loeb / Sale should be looked at. Even Superman for All Seasons, Spider-Man: Blue, and Daredevil: Yellow all are top notch
