Yeah, the movie was actually really good. First off, for all you Mel Gibson haters, no Jews were harmed during the making of this film. Second, it was another movie of Gibson's that used subtitles only. So, if you don't like to read, tough luck. Third, no big name actors/actresses to carry the film (which, personally, I didn't think hurt the film any). The story centers on a young Mayan man who gets captured by another Mayan group (?) after his village gets attacked. But, before he gets captured, he hides his pregnant wife and young son down this well. Anyway, he gets captured and must escape and return to his wife and son who are stuck in the well before it's too late. He escapes which sends the movie into a long chase sequence. Think "The Fugitive" mixed with some "Rambo". Minus the guns, idiot. Action ensues and then...nope. I'm not giving it away. Okay, fine. This is what happens: a spaceship comes down and fires upon the Mayan people. Think "Independence Day" when they destroyed the white house and stuff. Well, this spaceship destroys these Mayan temples and the main character has to flee before he dies as well. Does he make it? I don't know. Oh, and if you believed anything past the word "spaceship", well, you're just stupid. Really stupid.
The main actor, thus being the first film for the dude, was very good. Very good acting. His character, though, was kinda dumb at certain points and if you see the movie, then you'll know what I mean. As for Gibson, well, he is showing that he knows very well what he is doing behind the camera. He is definitely showing improvement with each film he directs. My only wish is that he would return to a genre that wasn't so controversial. I liked "Braveheart" very much so, but it seems like he's going away from that direction. I would love to see him return to acting, as well. He was great.
All in all, this movie was a pretty good movie. Nothing spectactular, but worth going to see. Mel Gibson did an excellent job and I look forward to seeing what he takes on next. I just hope he doesn't say anything about black people. Look where it got Kramer.
