I'm a little bummed. I put in a special order request with my local comic shop owner and the book didn't show up today. He said it may come next week, but I I think he may have forgotten to order it completely so I ordered one from Midtowncomics just to be sure.
Anyone get the book? How does it look!?

It looks beautiful!! I picked up the B&W HC and it's all 5 issues all in their pencilled forms. Very nice.

Any word on the extras? I am anxious to hear what else is included in the hardcovers.
Also, how is the reproduction quality on the full color version...still dark?

Thanks for the info, DaveCummings. Bummer to hear there are no new extras, then again I suppose having the entire 5 issue run in raw pencil is a pretty sweet "bonus" in and of itself.
Anybody have the regular full color edition? They skimp on the extra material there too?

I got the book today, I love it!! Mad's pencils are really gorgeous. Not to down Lichtner's coloring, but at times it looked a bit dark/dull. There's a gallery section in the back, but it only has the cover to the first issue and to the last issue in B&W. It would have been great if they added some of Mad's concept sketches for the characters like Iron Man, Thor, Valkyrie, etc.

It's so disappointing to hear that there are no extra features. For all the time the fans waited for this series, we could've been rewarded with something. Marvel could've put something together like a concept sketchbook in the back as onslaught said. It is kinda cool that they made a balck and white edition. I just figured it was the cover but I guess it was the whole five issue run. That's pretty sweet. Overall I was kinda disappointed with this series. The material was definitely not the best (IN MY OPINION) for Mad! to return to comics for. I'm glad he did, but this series just seemed half-assed for the amount of time given. It was announced August of 2005 I think and it finally was finished in the fall of 2008. A five issue series. The story should've been so much better than it was. I thought it was okay, but not magnificent. The artwork was great. I love Mad!'s work but I want to see a theme and basically if there was a theme, it was "let's give Joe Mad! every Marvel character and shove it into a five issue run on a book that it really won't make a lot of sense with or follow the original Ultimates." Clearly Marvel just took two hot superstars (three if you include Christian Lichtner, which I certainly do) and put them on one of their most popular titles disregarding the formula that made the first two volumes hits for them. I know I'll probably get a lot of flack for this but I've made my opinion on this before and I stick with it. Marvel should've never solicited the series until it was done. They should have gave Mad! a spidey title. He would've rocked that. Idk. It's great to see the return of Mad! but it's not the return I expected. I miss me some Battle Chasers.

I agree with a lot of what you said, Maverick. It is disappointing that there are not any interesting extras in the collections. The b&w edition is an awesome bonus on its own but I am sure there are a lot of cool concept sketches and prelim work that Joe did that would be a real treat to see!
I want to see more Battle Chasers too! I think that would really be the best way for Joe to return and make a fresh, positive impact on the comics industry. Although, if he wanted to do a mainstream Marvel book, something with Spidey would be awesome!

I think that the reason behind the lack of concept art and stuff like that is that a lot of times, when planning a tpb or hc, you have a certain number of pages to keep it in certain price brackets. If you started adding concept art and stuff like that, you had to bump up the page amount which could cause the price to jump up even more. The fact that there were two gatefold covers that ate up alot of paper didn't help either.
That and Marvel's Prestige HC format never really has a lot of concept art or sketches. The Oversized Hardcover format usually is the format that has a lot of material like that. But, Ultimates 3 is too small of a run for that format. The OHC format usually has about 12-13 issues in it, like the Ultimates 1 & 2 hardcovers. And usually formats like that take a lot longer to come out than the smaller format, the OHC format of House of M as well as Civil War took almost 2 years to come out.
It's not a matter of disrespect to Joe or anything like that, it's just a matter of how the collected edition department normally packages material.

DaveCummings, what you said about the page count makes a lot of sense, I had not thought of that. I wish Marvel could justify an OHC version of Ultimates 3, that would be awesome. Maybe Joe could send Nathen some of his Ultimates 3 concept work for us to oggle here on the site!
Anyway, I am still freakin' peeved that my LCS did not order the book for me. I have still yet to see the B&W or Full Color collections, I am dying to check them out!
