Okay i have to be dead honest here. I have talked to alot of comic artist who hate artist that imitate other artist styles. A style is your own, not a creation of someone else. What you want to aim for is repsect, not to be poser. Mad is a great artist and i have alot of respect for him. I grew up with alot of his work. I picked up a few things. But DON"T DRAW LIKE MAD!!! NO!! you want to pick up a couple of things from him, plus other artist. Trust me, if you want to succeed as an artist, learn from everyone you can, and don't imitate your favorite artist. Learn your anatomy, learn you face, learn your line techinques, learn texture. Then you'll get far. Trust me. :-P ;D TaD tadzero1085.deviantart.com

Not sure what all happened here, and sorry to bump an old thread. But I have come to Notice that its near impossible to copy another persons style. as you draw and get better your gonna naturally develope your own way of doing things, and your feel for those things.
Unless the picture your drawing is a straight copy, your never gonna get it to look exactly like some one elses.
But for the most part I do agree with you. Referanceing inst bad, But you do wanna expand your skills and try going about things in ways you never tried before.
I find myself refereancing off alot of artist who are alot different, Currently in the process of developing a style of my own. I have mutiple styles but finding it hard to decide one and to stick with. My moods always changing, and with it so is my art.

Great Comment Xherox, I know what you mean. I read this and thought of something that I think most every one on this forum would find interesting. Did you know that, historically artiest have become proficient at working in their craft by imitating the greatest artists of there time? For example, Long ago if you wanted to become a professional painter you became the student of a more accomplished artiest and they would have you paint imitations of there work along with other notable artists and by so doing you would learn to develop your own style. You would learn something from this artiest and something from that artiest and in the end your style would be a mix of 4 or 5 artists but it would be your own style. This is how artists have learned for thousands of years. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you are not tracing and as long as you are doing it with the end goal of having your own unique style.

"Good artists borrow, great artists steal." picasso. Who cares, Besides, drawing is fun, If I could copy Joe good enough to get people to get all pissy over it I would be overjoyed by my success.

i dont know what the big deal is , i gruw up drawing after mad, if i wanted 2 , thats is my choice and nobody elses buisness to come and tell me this or that , and its none of mines to go up to someone and tell them its wrong to do so , if your not tracing of taking one of his drawings and changing the customs to make it into your hero or whatever , and claiming its yours, ive seen so many ppl on DA whos done that lol ...but whatever i agree with ZWYGART

live and let live, if you wanna have the same style as some artist, go for it, it will never turn out to be exactly the same , but go for it , i encourage anybody

Let's not forget that Sensei Madureira's early style, althought not exactly alike, had alot of resemblances with Arthur Adams's style.
Here's a list of artist and their obvious influences:
Brian Hitch --->Alan Davis Stuart Immonem--->Adam Hughes Michael Turner--->Marc Silvestri Dale Keown--->John Byrne Greg Capullo--->John Romita Jr J. Scott Campbell--->Jim Lee Phil Jimenez--->George Perez
and all of these have earned mine and a lot of peoples respect.

I think that it's fully "legal" to get inspired by various artists, and sometimes it's quite obvious that's the case. But STEALING's totally wrong. Whether it's a TV or someone's style. Imagine you're an artist that've worked hard for years to get somewhere. The next day another get as much cred as you; becasue his style's the same as you. I think that's kinda crappy. Don't get me wrong - it's totally ok to get inspired, but copying's the opposite.

It's hard to steal or copy art. Besides actually copy and pasting how am I going to steal some ones style and tequnique? It's impossible. So whats the big fuss? So many people have drawn pictures of wolverine and nobody cares.

My style was formed by copying John Romita as best I could from my dads old spiderman comics, and then using Christopher Hart's manga books to define it although my style isn't really anime or manga at all.
Copying is just a way to learn and its almsot impossible to copy exzactly and becasue people are so different, once you get to a certain point in your style copyign you'll start to branch off and do things your own way. If you don't do that, and keep strictly to a certain artists style then your only limiting your own possibilities.
