Not to sound boastful, but I don't believe I need much help in the skill department, at least not anything a little bit of regular practice couldn't solve, which brings me to my problem. I have a LOT of trouble staying motivated to draw, and I am not sure how to appropriately fix diagnose and cure this plague of boredom and laziness. I'm not really sure exactly what it is, but generally it has nothing to do with a lack of time, but rather a lack of scope, that is, other when I have trouble coming up with something, I have trouble sitting down and putting something on the paper whether it's good or bad, and even if I start, I would usually stop unless I have a complete picture in my head that I want to work towards, because if I don't my drawing usually ends up vague or unfinished, never to be looked at again. It's more of a problem with focus and desire rather than just desire itself, because there are plenty of times where I start, and then halfway through the work, I sit there and think to myself "wtf am I doing??" and generally try to either figure out where to go from where I am, or just quit and try again until I either complete something or lose steam spending two or more hours just screwing around with no sense of direction.
Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated.
and for the "tl;dr" people - lack of focus and direction makes it really hard to keep on track and hinders the ability to draw on a regular basis; please help

If you want my advice. I'd say find an intersting project to keep yourself motivated. I've had similar problems as you in the past. I recently made an 8 page comic for a local comic shop owner who was throwing together an anthology. I decided to give it a go, and voila! I was having a blast working on it! All day at work all I could think about were page layouts I wanted to try, and getting back home to work on it. I really grew as an artists during that periode as well. So yeah, basically find a project to keep focused. There's a site called Drunkduck.com that posts comics from people across the globe. For free! There's some quality stuff there too. You should check it out. It's a good way to practice and get feedback on your work. You can even check out the comic I was just speaking of. (Shameless plug #1). www.drunkduck.com/Nightbeast_Eternal/Anyways, I hope you find your groove again. Good luck.

I know exactly what you are talking about, shamrok. Though I don't believe I have the skills (yet), I also have the same problem of finding motivation. Going to a comic-con really does it for me. Seeing all the other artist out there promoting their stuff just makes me want to get in the game and be apart of that life. But for those of us with limited funding, looking through old sketchbooks or art books of others helps get me wanting to draw. Seeing what other people can do just makes me wonder, why am I not putting out stuff, y'know?
Post some of your stuff up, shamrok. I love seeing people's artwork. Having others look at your stuff and getting their critique on it might light a fire.

Try music. Put on some music that works for you. I have found that when I want to draw something sci-fi or edgy I put on trance, for portrait work I listen to things like U2.

mate, you pretty much answered your own question on your opening sentence, most motivation is from wanting to develop your skills constantly and not thinking you are already at your limit or sticking to a comfort zone. I suggest you broaden your scope a bit, try looking at the huge variety of artwork and artists out there that will feed your imagination, when you think youve seen it all someone else does something thing that you never thought possible. www.conceptart.org/forums is a good start, alot of good artists go there... good luck

Well I drew this I would say about 3 years ago as a quick drawing, plus I just have a bad scanner, so sorry.

To me there's no better way to stay motivated than keep seeing work from your favorite artist. There will be always people saying "Don't draw like this guy cos' it s*cks, draw like this one!" that makes you want to quit...

Sounds like you have some issues with your support team there walison. Don't worry about that stuff here. I don’t recall ever seeing any ridiculing going on around here, at least not in the last few years.
