I would say that a little bit of both is necessary if you want to get a truly believable image. Use your straight edge and grids to set up size and relationship and then just eye the rest. Now there are a million different ways to do it and I’m sure that many will be listed here in no time but one thing you will have to all agree on is that there are times when free handing is not enough and a tool is needed to get the proper effect and procession. I think that in an ideal world one would hope to obtain a level of perfection that they could draw the perfectly straight line or the perfect cercal. However, we don’t live in that world so don’t hold your self too to high a standard.
